Summary: I was shocked to learn that the Holocaust was carried out across Europe by the Nazis or by Nazi collaborators. Among the collaborators outside Germany, many voluntarily and brutally took part in the persecution of Jews. (Other books on the Holocaust say that some Nazi collaborators persecuted Jews with a brutality that even shocked the Nazis.) This was because antisemitism was roaming all across Europe. (In fact, European antisemitism existed even before Hitler; it simply reached its peak under him.) Of course, not everyone cooperated with the Nazis. In Denmark, for example, citizens voluntarily participated in saving Jews. I suppose that is some consolation.
Reflections / Implications: Seeing how the Holocaust was carried out over such a vast area with the cooperation of Nazis and Nazi collaborators made me wonder how World War II might have ended if the energy used for the massacre of the Jews had instead been directed toward the war effort. I also think that totalitarians like the Nazis, because they disregard human life and are oppressive and irrational, may have all the more readily joined in the brutal extermination of Jews in the occupied territories.

I thought the passage explaining that Eichmann did not agonize over any problem of conscience from the time the Final Solution was concretely discussed and prepared at the Wannsee Conference in January 1942 until the summer of 1944, when that Final Solution was abandoned without Hitler’s knowledge, captured the essence of his crime very well. After confirming what the will of the highest authority in the totalitarian system to which he belonged was, Eichmann devoted himself to carrying it out, and that was the essence of the evil he committed. As Germany’s defeat became increasingly certain in the final stage of the war, other criminals tried to abandon the existing Final Solution in order to conceal their crimes, but unlike them, Eichmann consistently sought to realize the Führer’s will and believed that this was his conscience. Those criminals who acted while recognizing that their conduct was criminal, and who changed course when they thought another choice would be better for their personal future, had not fully abandoned the individualistic element within themselves and therefore could still turn back, even at the last moment. But Eichmann, who remained devoted to totalitarianism to the very end, continued to create victims even at moments when he still could have turned back, and this is grounds for holding him even more guilty. It was the crime of abandoning individualism.
This section shows in detail how the massacre of Jews unfolded in various European countries, and also what kinds of heroic actions—or what kinds of human hesitation, even in those dark moments—saved many lives. The author says that Eichmann’s statement, “Everything was always in a state of perpetual flux, like a constantly flowing river,” did not accord with the facts.
In reality, the Nazi policy of exterminating the Jews was not implemented uniformly in the same way everywhere; Nazi actions differed depending on how people in each country behaved. This shows that the idea of a totalitarian government moving in a perfectly unified, linear fashion is merely a myth. In other words, the author strongly argues that no matter how rigid a totalitarian regime may appear, within one’s own sphere there remains room for individuals, acting according to their convictions, to resist and restrain its rampage.
The image of the Jewish massacre is that of the killings in the eastern regions—Poland, Ukraine, and elsewhere. Those areas were the center of Europe’s Jewish population, and the largest number of Jews were killed there. Ironically, Eichmann had little direct connection to the large-scale massacres in those regions, and the Israeli government’s attempt to stage, in Jerusalem, the punishment of the chief culprit behind the mass murder of the Jews by tying responsibility for those killings to Eichmann was not fully successful.
Even so, I am now even more curious about Chapters 14 and 15, which go on to explain under what legal reasoning and through what appeals process Eichmann was sentenced to death.
Born to Run
The murder of 6 million Jews did not take place evenly throughout World War II; it was concentrated in the one or two years immediately before the end of the war. In particular, I came to understand that Jewish suffering in Europe varied greatly by region, so I looked further into the historical context in which the majority of Jewish victims were in Eastern Europe. Since the Middle Ages, the ruling classes in Eastern Europe had used Jews as a way to deflect the grievances of the ruled classes arising from underdeveloped economic conditions, and the Jewish state envisioned by Herzl in the early 19th century, which became the beginning of Zionism, was also chiefly rooted in the massacres of Jews (pogroms) carried out in Eastern Europe. Therefore, the tragedy that befell the Jews during World War II may be interpreted not simply as a one-time event caused by Hitler’s madness, but as a tragedy in which long-accumulated social hatred and prejudice against Jews erupted temporarily through the event of war. At the same time, through cases in which resistance to protect Jews arose spontaneously in Western and Northern Europe, which were more developed than Eastern Europe, I understood this as another important historical example showing that material and economic development are indispensable to preserving individual rights and civic consciousness.
