Conservatism Is Regressive and Should Be Abolished

Conservatism is reactionary and should be discarded.

In real-world politics, progressivism and conservatism are often used almost as synonyms for the left and the right. I am by no means unaware of the left and the term itself, but it seems more urgent to examine the words “right-wing” and “conservative.”

Whether one looks at the dictionary definition of “conservative,” its Chinese characters, or the conduct of self-proclaimed conservative politicians in real politics, it seems fundamentally incompatible with evolutionary liberalism. In other words, I do not believe conservatism (保守) can be used as a synonym for the right. I despise the word conservatism (保守) for the two reasons mentioned above.

First, conservatism (保守), both in its dictionary meaning and its everyday usage, carries a reactionary connotation. It is an obvious fact that neither individuals, families, nor societies—and not just businesses, but even governments—can build an advanced civilization by merely preserving what they already have. Second, in real politics, self-proclaimed “conservative” politicians have merely served as a lever for the left. The People Power Party, which presents itself as a conservative party, is in reality nothing more than a tool for drafting the Democratic Party’s left-wing populist agenda.

Simply discarding the word conservatism (保守) and adopting liberalism will not change everything. However, if we are to clearly define the ideology we seek and develop and implement real-world policies that accord with that ideology, then the proper order of things is to state its name accurately from the outset. We must appeal to the public and to voters. We must show them that there is an alternative: evolutionary liberalism, grounded in a firm ideology unlike the enfeebled politics of conservatism.
