What kind of book is it?

Nobility

The word “noblesse” derives from

the Latin word “nobilissimus.”

It was used to refer to or describe

the family and relatives of a dignified emperor,

so it is very much a term rooted in a class system.

After the Middle Ages, when noble status

and lowly status were clearly distinguished,

groups of people within a given territory

who shared the same appearance,

language, and culture

formed nation-states,

and under the influence of Protestantism,

which sought freedom from the Catholic tradition

that held the keys to heaven,

the idea began to take root

that all human beings, created in the image of God,

are equally noble regardless of rank.

In the 19th century,

two approaches emerged

to explain and resolve

the existential poverty and deprivation

faced by such noble human beings,

but unfortunately those approaches

came into conflict with each other.

Equality, which says that the rich

have taken from the poor

and therefore the possessions of the rich

should be taken and returned to the poor,

gives power to the state.

Liberty, which says that the freedom of the market

must be guaranteed

so that private property can be accumulated,

gives power to the individual.

The American author says

that the principles of conservatism

derive from this liberty,

and opposes the federal government’s

excessive interference

in the independent choices of state governments.

He argues that education, culture, and society

can best be understood and addressed

by the people directly involved,

and that no matter how beneficial a change may be,

it should not be driven by state power.

The welfare state

Civil rights

Agricultural protection

Labor unions

He says that the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution—

“Powers not delegated to the federal government by the Constitution,

nor prohibited by it to the states,

are reserved to the states or to the people”—

has been freely abused

by the New Deal.
